Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens - better than the general public by the name of Queen Latifah, is an American actor, rapper, and singer. Her work as Queen Latifah on television, film and in music has earned numerous prizes. These include an Golden Globe Award two Screen Actors Guild Awards Two Image Awards A Grammy Award Six additional Grammy Nominations Emmy Award Nomination and an Academy Award. Queen Latifah was born in and was raised in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita an educator who worked for Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens Jr. a police officer. Latifah's parents divorced at the age of ten. Latifah was brought up in the Baptist church and she attended Catholic school at Newark New Jersey. When she was 8 Her cousin gifted her the stage name Latifah which translates to tender and gentle in Arabic. Being a tall girl, the 5'10 tall Latifah was a forward for her basketball team in high school. in a school show, she sang Home from The Wiz. Latifah began beatboxing with the group known as Ladies Fresh. Latifah was a part of the original Flavor Unit group that included a variety of MCs, as well as the producer DJ Mark 45 King. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the 45King) recorded a sample of Queen Latifah her rap Princess of the Posse. The song was recorded and given to Yo! MTV Raps Faddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music has signed Latifah following her hearing of the song. The singer released her debut single, Wrath of My Madness, in 1988.
